This must be ingrained in my mind, it must keep me from my machine for I know deep inside that I am not as ready as I wish I was. Someday I will accomplish all that is needed and I will sit at my machine and I will pay it the proper attention that it needs
Advice from a 1949 Singer Sewing Manual… Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do…never approach sewing with a sigh or lacksadasically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so that your mind is free to enjoy your sewing… When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on…[if] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.
…As for now, my days are spent filled with unmade beds and a sink FULL of dishes. And while we are at it…my hair has been “out of order” for at least three months now! Lipstick doesn’t exist in our house, and lackadaisiality is my middle name. I long to sit and have time to do things like sew, or knit, or paint…but for now I am learning to love who I am today without those things.
